Talk...part 1

I found this talk given by Neal A. Maxwell in '96 called 'Becoming a Disciple', it is the best talk in the whole world! I am going to type it in here because I think it will help me remember it more and because I have to share it! I've read it a couple times now and just love it. I will do it in parts so that way you have a chance to read it, I will break it up the way he does, but if you want to read the whole thing go ahead. Do I just do what I highlighted (which happens to be at least 90% of it) or everything? I'll do everything.....

How grateful I am that we may rejoice in God’s great gift of immortality, unearned and universally given to mankind through the Resurrection of His Son Jesus Christ. “For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive” (1 Cor. 15:22). However, God’s greatest gift—eternal life—will be given only to a comparative few: those who respond to Jesus’ invitation, “Come, follow me” (Luke 18:22). The great gift of the Resurrection, therefore, will be “added upon” by the exaltation inherent in eternal life, which is contingent upon the degree of our discipleship. Thus, it is Jesus’ invitation to discipleship that I would like to discuss.

When Jesus took upon Himself the heavy, atoning yoke in order to redeem all mankind by paying the agonizing price for our sins, He thereby experienced what He Himself termed the “fierceness of the wrath of Almighty God” (D&C 76:107). The phrase itself makes the soul tremble. Jesus also volunteered to take upon Himself additional agony in order that He might experience and thus know certain things “according to the flesh,” namely human sicknesses and infirmities and human griefs, including those not associated with sin (see Alma 7:11–12). Therefore, as a result of His great Atonement, Jesus was filled with unique empathy and with perfect mercy.

In turn, He who bore the atoning yoke has asked us to “take my yoke upon you, and learn of me” (Matt. 11:29). So the taking of Jesus’ yoke upon us constitutes serious discipleship. There is no greater calling, no greater challenge, and no greater source of joy—both proximate joy and ultimate joy—than that which is found in the process of discipleship. This process brings its own joys and reassurances. We must not, however, expect the world to understand or to value our discipleship; they will not. In a way, they may admire us from afar, but they will be puzzled about the priorities resulting from our devotion.

Shouldering the yoke of discipleship greatly enhances both our adoration and knowledge of Jesus, because then we experience, firsthand, through our parallel but smaller-scaled experiences, a small but instructive portion of what the Savior experienced. In this precious process, the more we do what Jesus did—allow our wills to be “swallowed up in the will of the Father”—the more we will learn of Jesus (Mosiah 15:7). This emulation directly enhances our adoration of Jesus.

Simultaneously, in this same process, the more we become like Jesus, the more we come to know Him. There may even be, more than we now know, some literalness in His assertion, “Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me” (Matt. 25:40). We lack deep understanding of the implications of that remark of Jesus. As with so many things, He is telling us more than we are now prepared to receive.

The Prophet Joseph Smith, writing redemptively to his rebellious brother, said to William, “God requires the will of his creatures, to be swallowed up in his will.” The Prophet Joseph then pled with William to make “one tremendous effort … [to] overcome [his] passions, and please God” (The Personal Writings of Joseph Smith, comp. Dean C. Jessee [1984], 115). Alas, William didn’t do it, just as some of us fail to overcome our passions and thereby fail to please God. We are too busy pleasing ourselves.

In contrast, meek Enoch reached a point in his discipleship, wrote Paul, when he received a testimony that he pleased God (see Heb. 11:5). Ponder that. One can come to that point where one knows that he or she pleases God.

Cookies....

That's right, I made some cookies!!!!!! I now you're thinking how can she make cookies after reading my last post! Also remember in my last post that's all I could think about! I tell ya' taking a shower makes you feel good, I may regret doing so much today but I just had to make cookies.

I made Gingersnaps and had to find a recipe that didn't call for cloves because I didn't have any! I found one on cooks.com
Dry ingredients

Wet ingredients

Mixed together

Ready for the oven

Finished!

They were good although a bit crunchy, I have a tendancy to over cook my cookies because I check on them and they are doing great and then I leave them in a min. too long. I think these would turn out crunchy anyways, any ideas to make them softer?

Honesty post....

Okay you want honest, I'll be honest, I haven't taken a shower in 4 days, and for that matter I haven't changed my clothes either, sorry to totally gross you out but I just haven't been able too! I want to take a shower (and it might help if I had one that looked like the picture) but I now it will totally wear me out and I don't know if I will even have the 'breath' to do it, I get very short of breath nowadays whenever I get up and do something, as for the not changing clothes, why when I don't do anything? and they are really warm and comfy. Don't dispare I finally took a shower today, I forget how nice they feel, I did make it and although I was worn out I just rested afterwards and didn't worry about my hair (which to me is the most important!) I figured it was okay to have crazy air-dried hair since I had showered.

On another better note I saw 'Shrek the Halls' last night and all I could think about was how much I wanted a Gingerbread man to eat!!!!!! and how any cookie in general would be nice! But I really can't make cookies! (I can't even take a shower!) So for now I will post these pictures and drool.

Uplifted

I don't want to make this a long post I need to go to bed but I just had to say 'Thank you' to all my blog friends and your kind comments, it really has uplifted me and made me feel better, I don't post stuff just so I get comments I wasn't thinking that at all and yet whenever I get a comment on that post I feel so blessed for the honest, kind blog friends that I have. Thank you for lifting me up and helping me have a great day!

More pictures....

Here are some more pictures of my sister and her family, it was so fun to have them here, I forgot how active a 2 year old is!!!! always doing something, moving, the best part was when he pretended to be superman or spiderman, if he was spiderman he would pretend to put a mask on and then he had a 'run' that he would do, guess it's hard to explain, if he was superman he would put an arm in the air and run.

***I loaded these small and then deleted them, loaded them bigger and they are still turning out this way! So Sorry!!!****

I was lucky enough to be able to have the energy to trim my niece's hair, I also colored my sisters but then we never cut it! Sorry!!!!

They went to a dinosaur museum

And the place we like to go to with the dogs, we took a picnic but it was so windy we only lasted 10mins.

Finally a post!

I have been struggling to post because I want to be honest and yet if I do I fear that I will drive my readers (if I have any) away, I don't want to be depressing, I really am not, but I feel like that is how I will be portrayed if I write down what I am thinking. But I really want to post so maybe if I lump it all in one it won't be so bad.

The past couple of weeks I've notice a decline in my health, I was so excited that my sister and her family were coming up and thought that maybe that would help me to have something exciting to look forward too (and I was) and that my health would some how be good, but the closer it came I would notice week by week that I was sliding a little bit and then I would be a little sad because I realized that I wouldn't be able to do as much and even wondered if I would be able to enjoy them while they were here, I was able to enjoy them, it was so wonderful getting to know my nephew (who is 2) so full of life and energy, and my niece (who is 6) we made word searches and played tic-tac-toe alot. But I also could see my health decline a little while they were here, take Thanksgiving for instance, they left my house early to visit Temple Square and then hang out at my parents house until dinner, I sat around all morning and then barely got a shower in before leaving, I only stayed at my parents house for 3 hours!!!!that's it! and I had to leave because I just couldn't breathe well! On the way home I got so tired that when I did get home I went straight to bed for two hours! I finally got up and was able to spend the last couple hours with my sister and family because they flew out the next morning! Also Thanksgiving night I had a little episode of hemoptysis again, not again! why? oh why?! I had just barely finished a 6 week course of IV's tuesday night so I hooked back up that night, was barely off for 48 hours! So then Friday and Saturday were really bad days, didn't feel good what so ever, Sunday I at least went to Sacrament meeting, first time out all weekend. Monday I felt a little better and today the same.

I have another problem, there is a vein in my neck on the right side (right jugular vein) and it is so big! it really worries me, it really only started sticking out in the past three weeks and it would for two days and then go away, came for a couple days and then started going away, well it came back friday really big and hasn't gone away! If it happens on the left side as well it is heart failure! I've called the dr. mine of course is out of town this week, the other one has no idea and says if I get worse or worried about it too much just to go to the ER to have it checked out. I did go to the dr. the tuesday before thanksgiving and they didn't have any good answers for me, I love that! makes me wonder why I go to the dr. really. unless it's life threatening they really can't do anything for me! So I have that to deal with, it does hurt a little and is uncomfortable, now today a part on my other side is starting to hurt, aaahhh!!!!!

My husband and I have talked about death a lot, when we talk about it I sometimes get freaked out like we are talking about it because it means it will happen soon but I know that's not true because we talked like that a year ago! But I wanted to mention it because I feel a lot more comfortable with it right now, before I didn't feel ready, I still don't, but more ready than before, I have been working on my personal self to become a better disciple and that has really helped, I know that the timing of death is up to the Lord but if you could see how I am or be in this body like I am you see that it won't hold up much longer, I am not scared, I have no idea what the after life is like but I'm not worried about it, that will be fine, I'm just sad to leave my husband (and doggies, and family) I just feel so bad that my husband will have to carry on without me, but I think we have been given this extra time together so that both of us can work on being better disciples and more receptive to the spirit so that when the time does happen it is a spiritual experience for both of us.

I have been wanting to blog about all the wonderful stuff that I have been reading and gaining from but then I just am tired and don't feel like typing so I just read blogs instead, but wow can I just say I love this past conference! my Ensign is getting so marked up! And I bought a 'Preach my Gospel' since it has been talked about so much and I've never had one, that is really good too. And of course the book I'm reading by Henry B. Eyre, I have a little notebook with it that I write quotes in that I like. I still want to try and post them for you because they are just great and I am so uplifted when others share their spiritual thoughts from church and such.

Alright, thanks for listening, I hope it wasn't too bad, I am so grateful for my blog friends, especially the ones that ask where I am if I haven't posted in awhile, thanks so much:)

Also I had so much fun with my sister, we have so many photos! I really need to make a slideshow she has the cutest kids! did I mention that while she was here she needed to go to the ER and there found out that they are having another boy!!!!! and for the first time I actually understood the ultrasound pictures, they turned out really well! It was great to be with my family but kinda sad knowing in the back of my head that it was probably the last time I would see them and thinking, wow I won't even get to know my new little nephew, well that's what heaven's for huh?

I love the christmas season, I love reading the blogs and seeing everyone's decorations, happy holidays! Sorry no pics this post, first don't know what pics to put with it and then too many to choose from for my niece and nephew! Next time!

Happy Thanksgiving!

Just want to wish everyone a great and happy thanksgiving day! We are having a ball here and now we are just hours away from the food!!!! and I didn't have to do anything this year!!!!Of course I think that is what makes part of Thanksgiving, the prep of the food, but what can you do if you weren't allowed to make something? I'm looking forward to it anyways. We tried taking family photos outside yesterday, too cold! Here are some more of my fun and adorable niece and nephew...

Family Fun...

Sorry again for the lapse in posts, I was getting ready for my sister and her family's arrival and then they came last friday and we have been having fun ever since! I just downloaded some pictures so I have proof of how adorable my niece and nephew are. My nephew is 2 and so cute! He love superman and spiderman and pretends that he is them and so he has the funniest run when he is running like them, he is always playing, playing, playing!!!! My niece is 6 and getting so old! we play tic tac toe and I created a couple word searches for her, she loves to spell stuff to me and talk! It has been so fun having them here, they don't leave until the day after Thanksgiving so we have some time still to play.

Where have I been?

Sorry it's been so long since I've posted, I haven't been taking pictures and I love pictures with blog posts so I like to include them, also I then feel like I have nothing to blog about, I have been doing good in health for which I am so grateful for and so I have been a little more active around the house (organized the tupperware and my desk for example) but not too much since my body doesn't like that! And sometimes I don't feel like typing except for comments, I will read and comment on blogs and then get my fill of the computer and be done! I will try to be better but I might not this next week since my sister and her family will be here starting friday! just two days!! I'm so so excited.

Some thoughts I've had on my mind lately that I will finally post: I have been trying to read more instead of tv or computer, I am reading Henry B. Eyring's book 'To Draw Closer to God' I read it a couple years ago and love it, a must read for anyone, my husband is the one that owned the book before we got married! I've also been reading conference talks, first on the internet and then finally got the new Ensign! I love highlighting and marking the margins with my own thoughts, I renewed our subscription and got the 14 issues (two conference ones) so that my husband and I would have our own copy.

Also I have a confession, I have been really bad at visiting teach since I got sick last year, I haven't gone at all!!!!! first it was because of my health, and then I let that become and excuse and my companion also has major health issues and right now I need someone who can come and pick me up not me them! and the sister we visit taught needed someone who could help a little more physically which I can't do! so I was letting that be an excuse too. But for the past several months I have really wanted to be a good visiting teacher and was bugging the RS pres. about it and finally got assigned a good companion and two sweet ladies, as I was reading Silvia H. Allred's talk 'Feed My Sheep' it just hit me so strong and this is what I shared with my sisters:
"The purposes of visiting teaching are to build caring relationships with each sister and to offer support, comfort, and friendship."

I really want to build a relationship like that with my sisters.
"Through our monthly visits as visiting teachers, we have the power to bless each sister as we extend our arms of love and kindness and give gifts of compassion and charity. No matter what our individual circumstances are, we all have the opportunity to edify and nurture others"

This helped me know that even in my circumstances there is something I have to offer my sisters.
"We have divine promptings encouraging us to do good. Let us commit to effective visiting teaching. We can provide temporal and spiritual nourishment. We can and should offer understanding and be able to teach doctrine. We can relieve spiritual hunger and feed the sheep."
"Our service should be selfless, quiet, and be done willingly, with our hearts full of the love of God and His children. There must be genuine concern to shepherd the flock, to invite them unto Christ."

I told my sisters that I was committed to them and to visiting teaching and wanted to help in any way I possibly could and hope that I could help bring them closer to Christ.

Movies/Name...

R O R O

I don't think besides explaining why I choose the 'island' part of my blog why I chose the 'RoRo' part too, obviously it's not my name just a nickname, I grew up without being called by a nickname, really it's true, there was the occasional 'making fun of name' nickname but I was never called a nickname, come to think of it none of my siblings either except the baby of the family, anyways I always liked how you could call Emily Em or Kathryn Katy But I never had one, so now I do! So I know people sometimes use their first name but I kind of like using my nickname since I never had one! So that's why if I sign something it's RoRo and unless you need to mail me something I prefer RoRo.

Way to go Wendi and Marie! that was a little bit hard since if you don't have the voice in your head it doesn't sound as great just reading it!
1. Remember the Titans
2. Miss Congeniality
3. Wedding Planner
4. Mulan
5. Toy Story
Mulan is my all time favorite, love Toy Story, could watch #2 & 3 over and over and I do like football movies especially this one!

100!!!!!

That's right I have posted 100 times! it has only been a little more than 3 months! Here is my first post, it was fun to go back and read that, I feel the same way about my blog and why I blog, since then I have gotten a digital camera so I can add pictures to my post (great I should have one of me on the computer!) I am still getting better at that one. I really love the blogging world, in my first post I mention how I had a ton of blogs in my google reader, I would keep up with a bunch of blogs but have since had to scale back because I want to make sure that the blog friends I have I can keep (as long as they want me), it does take time to keep up with blogs and comment but my blog friends are the most friends I've ever had! (wait does that sound pathetic?).

I'm not very good with words I just want to let my blog friends know that I am devoted to you and I read and keep up with your blog and try to comment as much as I can but since I'm not good with words sometimes I write a comment a couple times and then end up canceling because I just can't get it to sound right!

So just thanks friends for coming to 'my island' and partyin' with me.

5. "Plus is positive! Minus is negative!"

Can you name these movies?

Great Quotes...

I found some great quotes from a pile of papers from some Institute classes and since I like good quotes I thought I would share....

"All men are the spirit children of the Eternal Father. . .all have come or will come to earth at an appointed time, in a specified place, to live among a designed people. In all of this there is no chance. . .He alone determines where and when and among what people his spirit children shall undergo their mortal probation. . .all of these things operate by law; they are the outgrowth of long years of personal preparation in the preexistence." Bruce R. McConkie, A New Witness for the Articles of Faith, p.512-513

"We shall turn round and look upon it (death) and think. . .why this is the greatest advantage of my whole existence, for I have passed from a state of sorrow, grief, mourning, woe, misery, pain, anguish and disappointment unto a state of existence where I can enjoy life to the fullest extent as far as that can be done without a body. My spirit is set free, I thirst no more, I want to sleep no more, I hunger no more, I tire no more, I run, I walk, I labor, I go, I do this, I do that, whatever is required of me, nothing like pain or weariness, I am full of life, full of vigor, and I enjoy the presence of my Heavenly Father." Brigham Young, Journal of Discourses, 17:142

"Let me assure you, Brethren, that some day you will have a personal priesthood interview with the Savior, Himself. If you are interested, I will tell you the order in which He will ask you to account for your earthly responsibilities: First -He will request an accountability report about your relationship with your wife. Have you actively been engaged in making her happy and ensuring that her needs have been met as an individual? Second -He will want an accountability report about each of your children individually. He will not attempt to have this for simply a family stewardship but will request information about your relationship to each and every child. Third -He will want to know what you personally have done with the talents you were given in the pre-existence. Fourth -He will want a summary of your activity in your church assignments. He will not be necessarily interested in what assignments you have had. . .but He will request a summary of how you have been of service to your fellow men in your church assignments. Fifth -He will have no interest in how you earned your living, but if you were honest in all your dealings. Sixth -He will ask for an accountability on what you have done to contribute in a positivve manner to your community, state, country, and world." David O. McKay. June, 1965 to a group of men in the Physical Facilities Dept. of the Church

How I'm doing....

Well this week has turned into a good week, still not over and tomorrow is a dr. appointment so not thrilled. Every day I have been able to say at the end of the day that I have had a good day and appreciate that I haven't had fevers or long periods of not feeling good. I am really really grateful and hope it will continue. Thanks for all your love and concern.
